A bad opening day in many regards, the Green injury now means teams will just try to stop Larry Johnson. Fantasy football owners can’t have that happen.

One good thing for the Chiefs, the Broncos lost, and someone will lose tonight’s Chargers/Raiders game. So it’s not look all hope is lost.

The Patriots finally found a way to get rid of Deion Branch. The talented wide receiver has wanted out of New England for the last few months. The Seattle Seahawks traded a 2007 first round pick for Branch.

Deion Branch is a former Super Bowl MVP. The Patriots have been losing a lot of weapons, will it catch up to them? Probably not.

The Seahawks have weapons, but after an ugly 9-6 win yesterday, they need any offensive weapon they could get.

The schedule is out, and here are some of the highlights

Miami with a lot of primetime games
The Dolphins will play on opening night, Thanksgiving, and on Xmas. It seems 9 wins gets you pretty far nowadays. A lot of people are buying into what Nick Saban has done with the Dolphins.

Eagles vs Cowboys on Christmas
For anyone sick of the T.O. saga, the NFL wants to ruin your Christmas even more with the Eagles going to Dallas. Dallas should be an improved team, and the Eagles should rebound from last year, but everyone wants Owens to do something on the star, and get a 15 yard penalty. Yay.

NFL on NBC
For seven of the last eight weeks of the season, NBC will be able to choose which game will be a primetime game. No more clunkers on Sunday night.

More Thursday games
Thursday games are back, and the same as they use to be. Instead of the NFL network, why don’t they give these games to TNT. I am happy to see the Browns on primetime, once this year.

Well the game is over, and many questions need to be asked. I for one thought this was a poorly played football game on both teams part, and Seattle missed too many chances in the game. Seattle could have been up at least 17-7 at the half. I’ll start out with a simple question.

Why was Tom Brady doing the coin flip?
They had all these former Super Bowl legends there, couldn’t they have had Bart Starr flip the coin? Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw did not appear for the Super Bowl MVP ceremony, Joe wanted $100,000, what the hell?

Don’t they usually have 5 former players/coaches involved? Brady did a good job with the coin flip, so thats all that counts.

The Refs
What a bad job by the referees in this game. The Darrell Jackson offensive pass interference was a ticky tack foul, and it cost the Seahakws a touchdown. I do think Roethlisberger scored on the plunge, but thats all Seahawks fans have been upset with. What about Matt Hasselbeck getting called for a low block, after an interception? That call made no sense what so ever. Also there was a holding call a few plays eariler that was bad as well. This is suppose to be the best refs in the NFL, and they did a terrible job in the biggest football game of the year.

What happened to Big Ben?
He had a great playoff, then all of the sudden plays awful in the Super Bowl. He looked like he did last year in the playoffs, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. After the game, I heard nothing from him, like he slipped out of the back of the building. He is the youngest Super Bowl quarterback to win, where was he? Was he sick?

Seattle Seahawks mistakes
No clock management in the Super Bowl? Dropped passes? Missed field goals? You can’t win when you do that. I thought they had a good gameplan, but once they got near the red zone, things seemed to go wrong. Matt Hasselbeck’s interception in the 4th quarter ended their hopes of a Super Bowl win.

Tea Cup trophy presentation
The trophy presentation was held in some sort of Tea Cup or spaceship. Why? What was that about? The thing was the so small you couldn’t even fit 7 guys in it. This isn’t a carnival ride, this is serious.

With all the hype for the Super Bowl, I forgot to mention the Hall of Fame class of 2006. Troy Troy Aikman, Reggie White, Warren Moon, Harry Carson, John Madden and Rayfield Wright all made it to the Hall of Fame. For Madden, Carson, and Wright, this has been a long time coming. While I have no problems with this class, there are a lot of guys I’d like to see get into the Football of Hall of Fame.

Art Monk
It seems the Hall of Fame voters hate Art Monk. Why isn’t he in? He finished his career as the all time leading receiver in catches, which has been broken. With Art its more than numbers,he was a consistent player for most of his career. By the logic now where its all about the Super Bowl rings, he has three. Some of these Hall of Fame voters need to go (yes you Peter King.)

Art Monk’s number still look pretty good compared to other Hall of Famers, and some current players.

Michael Irvin
I know his personal problems are the only thing keeping him out of the Hall. I was never a big fan of the guy, but he was one of the best receivers of his era. His loud mouth style is still being emulated, and he won three Super Bowls. I am really starting to hate these Hall of Fame voters.

Derrick Thomas
Other than Lawrence Taylor, this guy was the most imposing outside linebacker I’ve ever seen.

Russ Grimm
Two things were reliable during Joe Gibbs first run in Washington, Art Monk and the Hogs. Russ Grimm was there for all the Super Bowls.

Thurman Thomas
The best running back in the AFC in the 90s. Maybe the lack of a Super Bowl ring is keeping this guy out. That’s not fair. The prototype of the modern NFL running backs, Thomas was a dual threat for the Bills K-Gun offense.

Maybe in 2007 some of these guys will get into the Hall of Fame.

The Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. The Steelers had a fairy tale story going into the football game. The Seahawks became a trendy pick leading up to the game. Maybe people don’t like fairy tales.

Both football teams looked tense in the early going. Seattle had a good game plan, but when push came to shove, they couldn’t deliver. Darrell Jackson started the game on fire with 5 catches in the first quarter, but had no more after that. Pittsburgh on the other hand got nothing going, and didn’t get a first down at all in the first quarter. Seattle had a touchdown called back on an offensive pass interference. When do they call that in a big game? Seattle did manage a field goal to lead 3-0 after one quarter.

Pittsburgh finally started to move the football when Hines Ward had an end around for 18 yards. However Ben Roethlisberger threw an interception on the next play. The Seahawks were force to punt, and Pittsburgh got going. Big Ben started to throw the football around, and Hines Ward made some plays. The big play came on a 3rd and 28, when Ben Roethlisberger ran out of the pocket, stopped, and threw the football across the field to Hines Ward. The Steelers scored on a 1 yard touchdown run by Roethlisberger. Seattle complained about the call, but to no avail. The Seahawks had a chance to score points at the end of the half, but had poor clock management, and Josh Brown missed a 54 yard field goal. The Steelers went into halftime up 7-3 in a half where they were outplayed.

The Rolling Stones were the halftime act this year. When the “Bad Boys of Rock N Roll” are reduced to being a safe entertainment act for the Super Bowl, maybe it’s time to pack it in. It was a long halftime show, but it could have been worse.

Pittsburgh stormed out of the gates in the second half, when Willie Parker had a Super Bowl record 75 yard touchdown run. Seattle needed to answer back, and once again put together a nice drive, but came up short when Josh Brown missed another long field goal. The Steelers had a chance to put the football game out of reach after driving all the way down to the Seattle 7 yard line, however Ben Roethlisberger threw a very poor throw, and was intercepted by Kelly Herndon, who ran it back for a Super Bowl record 76 yards. Seattle gleefully scored a touchdown when Matt Hasselbeck found Jerramy Stevens. Stevens had been dropping the football in the first half, and would continue to do so.

The Steelers were reeling early in the 4th quarter when Seattle was deep in Pittsburgh territory when Hasselbeck hit Stevens on the 1 yard line, but a penalty wiped out the play. Three plays later, Hasselbeck threw an interception. This was the turning point in the football game. The Steelers used a trick play, when Antwaan Randle El threw a perfect pass to Hines Ward for a 43 yard touchdown. Seattle was in comeback mood, but a big sack on a 3rd down forced a punt with 6 minutes to go. The Steelers were able to run 4 minutes off the clock. Seattle was in dire straits, and tried a comeback, but once again poor clock management put and end to their dreams. Fittingly Stevens couldn’t hold on to the football on 4th down, and the game was over.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the winners of Super Bowl XL by a score of 21-10. Hines Ward was named the MVP.

A few football teams stood out this year, not just in the win and losses, but also how they impacted the league as a whole.

Philadelphia Eagles
Last year they were in the Super Bowl, this year things fell apart quickly for the Eagles. T.O wanted more money, McNabb had try and steady the ship, while playing injured. Injuries and the whole Owens saga lead to this team’s early demise. The writing was on the wall in week one, when McNabb was hurt, and they lost to the Falcons. As bad as this football season was it could have been worse, the Eagles were very lucky to win a few games. Roy Williams interception on Monday Night Football put the final nail in the coffin.

Indianapolis Colts
For 13 games, this was the team that was going to challenge the Miami Dolphins unbeaten season, but then the Chargers entered town. The loss hurt in a few ways, for one thing, the Colts did play hard in their loss, and thus the blueprint on how to beat the Colts was made. A 3-4 defense will cause “protection problems.” Their loss to the Steelers was even worse, since the road to the Super Bowl was easy for the Colts. One missed kick later, and the Colts have a lot of questions and doubters heading into 2006.

San Diego Chargers/Dallas Cowboys/Washington Redskins
I lumped these football teams together for one reason, they provided the most highs and lows of the football season. All three teams had playoff hopes, but only the Redskins made it, the Cowboys and Chargers shot themselves in the foot one to many times. Dallas could have beat Seattle, but pissed the football game away in the final moments. That game led to Seattle becoming a powerhouse. The Redskins made the playoffs, but could not beat the Seahawks in a game that the Redskins very easily could have won.
The Week 2 Monday Night Football game between the Redskins and the Cowboys was the main reason why the Redskins made the playoffs and the Cowboys didn’t. San Diego on the other hand watched their Super Bowl dreams end due to way too many bad losses. Losing to the Cowboys in week one was bad enough, but their loss to the Eagles was awful. They had the game in hand, and watched a blocked field goal, turn into a nightmare. Their loss to the Steelers enabled the Steelers to get into the playoffs. I think the loss to Miami paints the picture of the San Diego season, they lost games they should have won. They were on par with the Colts and Pats, hell they beat both football teams, but now have many questions heading into 2006.

Miami Dolphins
I was shocked to see this team finish 9-7. Going into the football season, many questioned Nick Saban’s decision of having Ricky Williams on his team, but it gave the Dolphins a nice one-two punch. Chris Chambers finally lived up to all the hype, and became a force. I like Saban a lot as a head coach, and if Miami gets a fresh face at quarterback, they might be able to go real far.

Detroit Lions/ Arizona Cardinals
These two football teams were major letdown. Both favorites to make the playoffs, neither lived up to the hype, and watch their seasons go by the boards early. The Cardinals brought in Kurt Warner, who for all the stats he can put up, is not a team leader. Why not start Josh McCown? He has leadership tools. Detroit is in the same boat with Joey Harrington. Why is he the starter? What has he done in his career? When did Matt Millen start censoring what the fans can say about his team? When fans what your ass fired, its time to pack your bags. Good luck at Fox, you know he will come crawling back.

This football season had a lot of stories, that either got our attention, or became long bores. Well the action takes places on the football field, this year had a lot go on off the field, and become center stage.

The Whole Terrell Owens Saga
Without a doubt, the most annoying story of the year. It all started when T.O made some comments (which were true) about what happened during the Super Bowl. When did this code of honor about not insulting your quarterback start? I’m not for Terrell Owens, I’m just saying it’s not like he committed a crime, unless telling the truth is a crime. Things only got worse from there, then loud mouth Drew Rosenhaus got his face on TV. Owens wanted more money, which with any other football team wouldn’t be a big deal, but Andy Reid doesn’t pay superstars later in their career a lot of money. The media was foaming at the mouth over this, with helicopters and breaking news updates over nothing. Owens did play, and played well, but made some dumb comments about how the Eagles would be undefeated with Brett Favre as their quarterback, yeah right. The Eagles suspended Owens for the rest of the year, and the story moved to the sidelines. Thank god. Now player is bigger than the game, even T.O. The highlight of it all was the press conference with T.O. and Drew Rosenhaus, with Rosenhaus getting blasted with questions he had no answers for.

Exit Stage left…
This football season has seen the end of hall of fame careers. Jerry Rice attempted to be the Broncos 3rd receiver, but that didn’t work out, so he ended his career after 20 seasons. Jerome Bettis will play his final football game on Sunday, maybe. Goodbye Bus. Brett Favre has been dropping hints at calling it quits for a while now, I just want to see his mind made up. I am a Brett Favre fan and all, but come on, lets go already. If Brett does retire, his football career would end on a real sad note, as 2005 was a terrible season for the Packers. Doug Flutie looks like he will retire, and with a bang. He had a drop kick this year, that was awesome. Ray Brown has retired, 20 years of football, and his career ended on a rainy day in Seattle, that sucks.

Out with the Old Coaches
Lot of turnover in the coaching ranks, as many new face take over where the old failed. Mike Martz was an embarrassment this football season. He gets sick, and from his bed, tries calling in plays? Goes back to the Rams, just to complain about how the organization has turned their back on him? Is it any wonder why he won’t be coaching in 2006? Mike Tice other the hand, saw the Vikings reach a new low (or high depend on your outlook) with their Sex Boat scandal. Their new owner looks like a playboy, maybe the football player were paying homage to him. Norv Turner saw everything go wrong in Oakland. Jim Hasslet saw his Saints homeless in 2005, yet gets fired by their bumbling owner Tom Benson. A man like Benson, who used Hurricane Katrina to look for the Saints future home. Why is he still around? The Lions watched Matt Millen keep his job for no good reason. What needs to happen an 0-16 season for him to admit failure? Oh thats right, it was Steve Mariucci’s fault somehow.

Tony Dungy
Tony Dungy’s son died a few weeks ago. Why was Tony being asked questions about his future after they lost to the Steelers? He obviously has a lot more on his mind then football. Using the lost of Dungy’s son as a reason for the Colts demise was not called for. Football players are pros, and the Colts could not win the Super Bowl this football season, there is always next year for them.

Well the Super Bowl is getting near and that means one thing, the end of the football season, now I know everyone is pretty sad about it, but I’d like to take a few minutes and look back at some of the highlights (or low lights) of the non-football part of the regular season. You know, old players in the studio, throwing the football around, trying to act like they know what they are talking about. Let’s look at the NFL pregame shows this football season.

CBS
This season, CBS was much improved, for one they got rid of their idiotic “Punt-tv.” thank god. Shannon Sharpe’s Bugs Bunny routine might not be great to watch, but Dan, Boomer, and Greg made up for it. Also the broadcasting teams were much improved, as they took the weak links and added them with stable guys (Steve Tasker is decent, Gus Johnson is a mental patient) and pushed their aging faces to the back, Randy Cross who sucks, was pushed down to the 4th unit. Rich Gannon was the best newcomer this football season, he even filled in for Dan Dierdorf.

FOX
This year was an all time low for the slapstick FOX pregame show. Who came up with the idea for the NFL Sexiest Man contest? Was it J.B or Howie? In an attempt to get more casual viewers involved, but I’m guessing only men voted on this dumb contest. How about talking football, no more 10 questions with Terry. I’m tired of this nonsense. FOX’s main broadcasting crews are starting to slip, Dick Stockon is moving closer to senility. What is with Tony Siragusa in the end zone all the time? He only stays in one end zone the whole football game, and FOX shows it. What can you see from 100 yards away? Nothing.
While CBS got Rich Gannon, FOX got Neil O’ Donnell. What a mess. Neil needs to learn how to use a mic, and no more close ups, please.

ESPN
Where to start, well this was the final year of ESPN Sunday Night Football, and that is a great thing. Same old story with these old guys, more yapping over important moments, no understanding of the rules, or replay. I want to know who was running this show. They did not have to show the guys in the booth with their shitty company jackets, and a fake background of the city they are in, we know where the game is, you see it over and over again. The only decent part of the show was when Joe Theisman would get a little crabby with Paul McGuire. At least I won’t have to see these gargoyles anymore. I will have to see the NFL Countdown for a while, this show is aging worse than Chris Berman’s act. Mike Ditka is the only reason to watch.
ESPN needs to due away with NFL Live, it is very dull.

ABC
The swan song season of ABC Monday Night Football was a mixed bag. Madden and Michaels are the best team in the business, but their were a lot of dull football games this season. I’ve become use to it, and their still is the Super Bowl, so not all was bad. Granted ABC did lose Monday Night Football, and watched their replacement show got canned after one episode. The Dallas Cowboys vs Philadelphia Eagles, as Roy Williams ended the Eagles reign in the NFC East, classic.

It looks like the NFL Network wants a piece of the pie now, as they will broadcast 8 regular season games. in 2006. That’s right, not some pointless preseason game, but meaningful football games will be on the NFL Network. I’m curious over the move, I don’t know how many homes actually get the NFL Network, I read around 40 million homes get it, but what about the people who don’t have it? Not only that, but the debut football game on the NFL Network will be the night Thanksgiving game, what about those people, who get full after some turkey, and can’t enjoy some football?

I have the NFL Network, and I do enjoy some of their programs (I don’t care for Playbook, or the fact that they show NFL Total Access all night long, why not just put on some old NFL Films instead?) Is it getting close to a day where a football game will be broadcast over the internet, or a Pay Per View event? For people who don’t get the NFL Network, they will still show your local football team on your local stations, so that’s not so bad.

I have some questions, who will be the announcers for these football games? Rod Woodson? Rich Eisen? I hope I don’t have to see Terrell Davis doing a Broncos football game, only Shannon Sharpe is a bigger homer than him. I bet these guys are just as good as Dick Stockton is now, he is washed up.

It seems all I’ve been hearing about is how this Super Bowl has no flare to it, and I think that is a good thing. Usually when a Super Bowl has a lot personal stories, the game itself suffers from it (Bucs vs Raiders, Broncos vs Falcons, Super Bores.) So this Super Bowl has the Bus going home.

Just because the media isn’t into Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t mean anything. This guy is turning into a legend and no one cares. What other quarterback has started a career like this? He is 26-4 as a starter .

This Super Bowl could have had even less hype had the Denver Broncos won, I don’t even want to think what that would have been like. “Hey Jake, nice beard” yawn.

And what is with the Steelers being the favorites? Why spoil things now, they would be much happier as underdogs, that’s how they got to the Super Bowl. They probably won’t have made it to the Super Bowl if they had played in Pittsburgh. Seattle isn’t a bad football team, they did go 13-3 and had the NFL MVP, that doesn’t mean anything? Still, I’d like to see the Seahawks get crushed so the Browns streak continues. You know, how they lose every year to the Super Bowl Champion. Anything for a little pride after a decent 6-10 season.

Next football season will have a lot of new head coaches, as most of the jobs have been taken by new faces (thank god) with something to prove. Well there is one retread and that would be Dick Jauron. The Bills are a mess, and need someone to steady this sinking ship, if Jauron is the guy to do that, is up in the air.

As for the other new coaches, what is with these football teams acting like sharks? Gary Kubiak watches Denver lose the AFC Championship, and Kubiak is named head coach? How about giving the guy a little bit of time to deal with the loss. The Jets on the other hand that had reasons to act like vultures, they watched the whole Herm Edwards saga unfold.

What about the Raiders, when are they going to hire a new head coach? Are they waiting for the right guy? Being patient is one thing, but now they have a small pool of coaches to choose through. I’d like to see them get Jim Fassel, but I don’t know if he is available.

What a bizarre weekend of football, I am still wondering if this is real. The AFC Championship will be the Denver Broncos at home, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. In the NFC, we see the two best football teams fighting for a Super Bowl berth, as the Seattle Seahawks will play the Carolina Panthers.

Out of the 4 teams, I have doubts about all of them. Until DeShaun Foster got hurt, Carolina looked to be the best of the bunch, but they do have Steve Smith, which means a lot. As for Seattle, they could have easily lost to the Redskins, but Matt Hasselbeck would not be denied.
Denver was handed a gift, when the Patriots had a nervous breakdown turning the football over 5 times. The Steelers pulled off a shocking upset, and played a great football game for 55 minutes, but needed a missed field goal to go to the AFC title game.

I am still shocked about this AFC Championship. The Colts had a berth in the Super Bowl all but wrapped up with a win over Pittsburgh. Denver has lost the last two years to the Colts, but the Colts pissed away a Super Bowl, because their offense could not get it going, until a bad call by the refs. The Steelers will play in their 3rd AFC Championship game this decade, but now they are on the road, they are a better football team on the road. Denver has the best home field advantage in football however.

The NFC Championship is a dream match of the two best football teams. The Panthers are playing like they were suppose to all football season, when they were the trendy Super Bowl pick. Sometimes trends are a good thing. The Seahwaks had been the trendy pick for the Super Bowl last year, but now finally look like a mature team. If Shaun Alexander has a good football game, the Seattle Seahawks are hard to beat, and haven’t lost at home all football season.

Wild Card weekend came and went, and nothing wild happened. The Divisional Round usually has one of two classic football. All the football games this weekend are rematches, so you know there is a lot of bad blood. Last week, I was on fire with most of my picks (and I’m happy the Bucs lost.)

Washington Redskins vs Seattle Seahawks
The Redskins were very lucky to win last week. The played a terrible football game on offense, and now play the best team in the NFC. Seattle hasn’t won a playoff game in 22 years. No wonder they don’t get any respect.
Winner: Seattle Seahawks

New England Patriots vs Denver Broncos
Denver usually plays New England tough, and beat them early in the football season. New England though wasn’t healthy for that game, and are looking at a football team hasn’t won a playoff game since John Elway retired. I think it will be a close game, but New England has a shot at history, Denver is a weak 2nd seed in the playoffs
Winner: New England Patriots

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Indianapolis Colts
Why isn’t this the prime time football game on Saturday? The NFL’s biggest star is closing in on a Super Bowl berth, and Pittsburgh is a hot team right now. I think this football game will be closer than the last time these two teams played, but the Steelers aren’t good at stopping the pass. The Colts might be a little rusty, but it’s Peyton Manning.
Winner: Indianapolis Colts

Carolina Panthers vs Chicago Bears
The Bears are the feel good story of the year, they came out of nowhere this football season because of their defense. Change at quarterback, 2nd seed in the playoffs, this is way to much like the 2001 Bears, which lost their first game of the playoffs. Carolina is a hot and cold team, but I think they will be able to put up enough point to beat the Bears.
Winner: Carolina Panthers

Well I hope this week is more exciting than last week.

Two coaching moves were done today. Brad Childress was named coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Football teams are like vultures, this is the first time an Eagles coach could be interviewed, so the Vikings swooped in as soon as possible. Will Brad make Brad Johnson his starting quarterback for next season? He already talked about putting the boat stuff behind him, smooth move.

Herman Edwards should be the new Chiefs head coach very shortly. Why are the Jets doing this? Herm is a top notch coach, who hasn’t had offensive firepower, now you send him to a team loaded with it. The Chiefs get a guy who can turn the defense around, and knows how to win playoff games, something the Chiefs have not done since 1993.

That leaves the Jets head coaching job open. So, there will be a lot of wheeling and dealings in the next few weeks.

It’s that time of year again, where players and coaches clean out their lockers, and are given the boot by football owners and general managers. This football season saw a lot of coaches get canned. Some justified, some not. Who knows, maybe more coaches will be fired this offseason.

Mike Tice
I’m not a fan of the guy, or that pencil in his ear, but firing this guy right after your final football game, that’s harsh. Tice for the first time as a coach, didn’t look like a bumbling oaf. The Vikings turned things around after a bad start to the football season. My question is, who wants this job? Many questions need to be answered (who will be the starting quarterback for next season?)

Mike Sherman
The Packers want change. Now they can move on and completely rebuild this football team. The running back position will be a big need for this football team. I think they should hire Jim Bates, he made the defense a lot better this season, and he has been down this road before.

Dom Capers
This one was a no brainer. This football team had the bottom fall out from under them this season. This team has talented players, but needs some leadership. David Carr is not going to cut it.

Norv Turner
Another easy firing. When your football team gives up on you, it’s time to split. The Raiders had all the hype this season, but no heart. Norv is suppose to be an offensive mastermind. Where was the offense for Oakland this season? This time needs someone who is not a retread.

Mike Martz
Okay, this guy is like a jealous girlfriend, who even when the relationship is over, still likes to cause a scene. Why hasn’t he been looking for another coaching time with all of his time off. Instead he has been harassing the Rams. He tried to get some plays in, while he was in the hospital, and the Rams said no. Isn’t that a sign?

Jim Haslett
The Saints have been a disappointing football team for the last few years. This year though, I think Jim should have got a free pass. When your team is shuffling to find beds and practice fields, you can’t be focused enough to play football. If the Buffalo Bills head coaching spot is open, Jim can go there.

Dick Vermeil
This wasn’t a firing, but it does leave a job open. I think Dick made the right move, the Chiefs peaked a few years ago, and since than have been trying to become more of a defensive team. It hasn’t happened. This is the best coaching spot to have, since they do have Larry Johnson, and some weapons on offense. I think Dick was pulling his hair out over some of these losses, you need a defense to be a Super Bowl threat.

Some more jobs might open up. The Bills might be in complete rebuilding mode soon.
We shall see what else happens this offseason.

The Panthers needed a win to get into the playoffs. Carolina is the hardest football team to figure out, one week they are the best football team in the NFC, the next a very uneven football team. With a team like that in the playoffs, who knows. The Atlanta Falcons will be watching football for the next month. Atlanta has a lot of thinking to do this offseason.

The Panthers looked like someone lit a fire under their ass, because this was the best football game they played all season long. When you play with a much fire as the Panthers did today, good things will happen. Carolina on their first drive marched down the football field, and scored when Jake Delhomme found Ricky Proehl. Atlanta wanted to spoil Carolina’s playoff chances, and on their first drive they looked like they could. Mike Vick played well, but they only got a field goal out of the drive. DeShaun Foster ran the football up the gut, and scored on a 70 yard touchdown run. It was now 14-3 Carolina. That right there was the end of the football game.

The second quarter was just Carolina dominance. Delhomme found superman in pads Steve Smith for a touchdown, plus two John Kasay field goals. Carolina was up 27-3 at halftime. The football game got so bad, local TV cut away from the game, so I didn’t get to see the 3rd quarter, and I’m glad I didn’t. Mike Vick was pulled, and Atlanta never did find a way to get back into the football game. Carolina just kept getting points, and crushed the Falcons 44-11. That’s the way to get into the playoffs.

Tampa Bay was looking to win the NFC South, while the Saints had a shot at the number one draft pick. What looked like the biggest mismatch of the day, turned out to be an okay football game, Tampa doesn’t really impress me anyways, and I can see them being a one and done team in the playoffs.

It has been a sad football season for the Saints, but they came out playing hard, but when Todd Bouman was moving the football down field for the Saints, bad things happened, like they always do for the Saints. The Bucs intercepted Bouman, and where more than happy to cash in with a nice long drive. Chris Simms found Joey Galloway for a 7 yard touchdown. Bruised, but not beaten, the Saints answered back. Bouman wasn’t throwing the football around dangerously, and the Saints got a John Carney field goal. John is as old as dirt at this point in his football career.

Michael Pittman had a 64 yard run to set up the Bucs next score, another Simms to Galloway touchdown. The Saints were about to have a touchdown of their own, when Bouman found Devery Henderson for a 24 yard touchdown. The Bucs did get a field goal before the half, to lead 17-10.

Well enough of this exciting football game, as it was time for Tampa Bay football, which is very boring. This team at times can be so hard to watch. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the Saints woke up from this football boredom, and got a field goal to narrow the gap. The Tampa Bay defense sealed the football game for the Bucs, when they caused Bouman to lose the football, and recovered the fumble and ran it in for a touchdown. Tampa Bay wins 27-13, and wins the NFC South.

Mike Holmgren was back in Green Bay to see what probably was Brett Favre’s last football game. Seattle was only playing for Shaun Alexander quest for the rushing title, and all time single season touchdown record. I guess they didn’t want to “stab him in the back” like they did last football season.

Green Bay struck first, with a well executed drive, ending with a Ryan Longwell field goal. Longwell added another field goal in the first quarter. Seattle had a simple game plan, get Alexander the rushing title, then pull the starters. Very early in the second quarter Alexander got his 28th touchdown of the season, setting a new record. God, does this guy have the Seahawks by the balls or something? Yeah, it is a nice gesture, but let’s be reasonable here, he is a free agent next year, so start gathering up some coins to pay the man. Green Bay was able to answer back, when Noah Herron, the Packers 7th string running back, ran the football in for an 11 yard touchdown. When you are down to your 7th running back, it’s easy to see why this football season has been so hard on the Packers.

Seattle played their backups in the second half, and they played pretty well. Today’s football game wasn’t about rushing titles, or first round byes, it was about Brett Favre. Trailing 14-13 in the 3rd quarter, the Packers rallied taking a lead when Brett threw a touchdown pass to Antonio Chatman. While I have been critical of Brett Favre this football season, I will miss his style of football. We need more gunslingers like him in the league, not these sissies we have now. Any way the Packers won the game 23-17, as Brett got a loud ovation at the end of the football game.

Both football teams haven’t had much success this season. The Jets have last place clinched and were still in the running for the Reggie Bush Bowl. The Bills on the other hand looked pretty good last week, and wanted to end the football season on a good note. They will have some quarterback issues to resolve this offseason.

This was a wacky football game, as both teams fumbled, and bumbled, and scored a lot of points. The Jets defense has been their rock this football season, and it was today. After a Buffalo field goal, Ty Law got into the mix, when he intercepted Kelly Holcomb. The Jets answered back the only way they know how, by kicking a field goal. That’s Jets football in a nutshell. The Bills went back to their roots, as they ran a no huddle offense and got another field goal. Who is this? Jim Kelly? Anyway, if you run a no huddle offense, you better do more than kick field goals.

The second quarter was much more hectic. After a good kick return by the Jets, Cedric Houston ran the football in for a touchdown. Kelly Holcomb was still in a giving mood, and gave the football to the Jets, when his pass was picked off, and the Jets ran it back for a touchdown. Ty Law had another pick, but Buffalo did score a touchdown before halftime to trail 17-13.

Some more field goals, yawn. Buffalo did some more no huddle, and scored when Holcomb found Roscoe Parrish. I guess both football teams didn’t get the message, because it was back to the field goal party.

After Rian Lindell kicked his fourth field goal, the Jets Justin Miller ran the ensuing kickoff back for a 95 yard touchdown. Ty Law got his 3rd interception to ice the football game. The Jets win 30-26. They will not get the number one pick in the NFL draft.

Tony Dungy was back as head coach of the Colts. Sure the Colts don’t have anything to play for, but they were glad to have Tony back. The Cardinals are a bad football team on the road, but can they lose to back-ups?

Peyton Manning was only in the game for one series, and did not look impressive. The Colts will have two weeks to tweak their offensive superpowers. Arizona played their kind of football, throwing the football on almost every down. Josh McCown should be the starter for Arizona next football season. Jim Sorgi looked pretty good when he found Ben Utecht for a touchdown. I was hoping the Colts would pull Sorgi, and still beat the Cardinals, but Arizona was able to get a field goal in the second quarter. The game turned into an interception fest, as both teams traded picks, and played poor football for the rest of the second half. The Colts got a field goal to go up 10-3.

Jim Sorgi got another touchdown as he threw the football to Troy Walters. Up 17-3, Arizona battled back when McCown found Larry Fitzgerald for a touchdown, then got a record setting field goal from Neil Rackers. Neil Rackers had 40 field goals this football season.

Fittingly the football game came down to the Colts defense pulling of a surprising goal line stand to win 17-13. The Colts finish the regular season 14-2, now it’s waiting time.

The red hot Ravens went to Cleveland to try to finish the season with 3 straight wins. Cleveland was looking to erase that embarrassment of last week, and end the season on a high note. While it hasn’t been a good football season for the Browns, its better than last year.

The Ravens defense made the Browns look awful for most of the first half, at one point Cleveland has -2 yards of offense. The Ravens had many chances to put the game out of reach, but made stupid mistakes at the wrong time. First they had a touchdown called back, then they botched a field goal attempt. No wonder they haven’t won on the road this football season. Baltimore was able to get two field goals to lead 6-0.

Charlie Frye fumbled the football in the second quarter, and the Ravens picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown. This was the turning point in the football game, as the Browns woke up and started to move the football. Although the drive only got them 3 points, it was better than last week. Kyle Boller moved Baltimore down the football field, but threw a costly interception. Charlie Frye looked very sharp, as he directed the Browns into field goal range, and the Browns got a field goal to trail at half 13-6.

Baltimore got a field goal to start the second half, but the Browns ran the ensuing kickoff all the way down to the Ravens 24 yard line. Charlie Frye delivered as he found Antonio Bryant for a touchdown. Now this is Cleveland Browns football.

Cleveland kept doing things well, as Dennis Northcutt had a punt return touchdown. With a 20-16 lead, Browns defense made life hell for Kyle Boller, as the Ravens could not get anything going the rest of the football game. The Browns win 20-16, to end the football season on a good not.
