Two title bouts of importance took place tonight. One in the Heavyweight division and one in the Welterweight Division. Since the Carlos Baldomir vs Floyd Mayweather fight was for the “universal” Welterweight Championshion (and a $50 PPV) I’ll start with that one first.
Carlos Baldomir has had a cinderella story this year, first he beats Zab Judah in Judah’s hometown, then he beats Arturo Gatti in Gatti’s hometown. It was probably to much to ask him to beat the “best pound for pound” fighter in the world. Let’s just say, it was a sad end to a fairy tale, and a sad way to part with $50.
Pretty Boy Floyd came to the ring in a Gladiator outfit and pitched a shut-out. There isn’t much more to say about the bout. Floyd said after the fight that injured his right hand. It’s hard to find faults with a fighter who wins every round, but there was a lot wrong in this fight. With a big payday on the herizon against either Oscar De La Hoya or Shane Mosley, it’s easy to see why Floyd didn’t go all up for a show stopping performance. The crowd booed and some even left before the end of the fight as well. I don’t know if that’s the kind of exciting performance Floyd needed to earn the big bucks against De La Hoya. But, he did win every round and wins the Welterweight Championship.
In the Heavyweight Division, a fight that might have been even more boring was taking place. Shannon Briggs faced WBO Heavyweight Champion Serguei Liakhovich. Serguei Liakhovich looked like one of the new stars of the Heavyweight Divison against Lamon Brewster with perhaps the fight of the year. This time around, it wasn’t even close except best finish to a fight.
Shannon Briggs did something Lamon Brewster couldn’t do. In the first round, he countered a Liakhovich body shot with a good left hook. Liakhovich was rocked, and fought a very timid fight after that. The right to the body was Serguei’s best weapon against Brewster. Without that weapon, Liakhovich played it cool and won rounds. The worst part for boxing fans is that Briggs also played it safe for most of the fight after that. Briggs has had stamina problems in the past, so maybe he did the right thing.
After 11 and a half boring rounds, Shannon Briggs caught Liakhovich and put him down with 30 seconds left in the fight. Liakhovich got up but was unable to defend himself and took some more punches then fell out of the ring with 6 seconds left in the fight. Liakhovich was in no condition to get back in the ring and the referee called the fight with 1 second left. Wow, what a way to end an otherwise bad fight. Shannon Briggs is the new WBO Heavyweight Champion.
For Serguei Liakhovich this was a devasting loss that might take him out of the Heavyweight picture for a while. When you fall out of the ring from exhaustion and punches with less than 10 seconds left in a fight that you are winning, it’s hard to come back from that. Had he have held Briggs the rest of the round, he would have won a split decision. Ouch.
The Heavyweight Division this year has had two last minute (or in the Briggs case last second) KOs. Still, the division is weak. Next week Wladimir Klitschko fights Calvin Brock for the IBF Championship. If the Heavyweight Division wants an undisputed champion, Klitschko is the best hope. He has Emanuel Stewart, that’s enough to beat most of the Heavyweights.
